As a tropical storm, Ernesto made a direct hit on Puerto Rico on Wednesday, August 14, with rainfall predictions of up to 10 inches. The storm then strengthened into a hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph and churned north toward Bermuda. With powerful winds extending up to 230 miles from the storm’s center, tropical storm warnings remained in effect for the U.S. and British Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, including Culebra and Vieques. Americares Puerto Rico team has contacted over 40 partner health centers across the island and the lead mental health agency in Puerto Rico to offer support.
