Americares is training more than 350 school teachers, social workers, counselors, psychologists and administrative staff to better identify, assess and respond to the mental health needs of students dealing with the psychological effects caused by major storms. The Americares Mental Health and Psychosocial Support team based in San Juan began the trainings in five schools across Bayamón, Morovis, Naranjito, Orocovis and Toa Alta.

Americares is preparing to dispatch a mobile medical team to western Haiti to provide care in communities isolated by the recent flooding and earthquakes. The health-focused relief and development organization plans to have a team of nurses and a physician providing primary care services to children and adults in the Grand’Anse department starting next week. Americares is launching the operation at the request of Haiti’s Ministry of Health and Population.
