Americares is launching a response to Hurricane Fiona, which struck Puerto Rico’s southwest coast on Sunday, triggering life-threatening flooding and landslides that caused catastrophic damage to roads and bridges and leaving the entire island without power. The full extent of the damage is still unknown as power outages continue and a tropical storm warning remains in effect.

Cora Nally has joined Americares as director of international emergency response and Mariel Fonteyn has been promoted to director of U.S. emergency response.

Stamford, Conn. – Aug. 1, 2022 – Americares is responding to the devastating flooding that struck southeastern Kentucky late last week, killing at least 30 people, causing widespread damage and displacing hundreds of families. According to Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, dozens of others remain missing, and the death toll is expected to rise as search and rescue efforts continue. The historic flooding also knocked out vital power, water and roadway infrastructure, some of which has yet to be restored.

Stamford, Conn. – July 29, 2022 – Americares is preparing to deploy an emergency response team to southeastern Kentucky to respond to the catastrophic flooding that’s left 16 people dead, damaged hundreds of homes and left tens of thousands of people without power. Search and rescue teams continue to look for survivors, and Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said he expects the death toll to increase.
