AmeriCares Welcomes Medical Director Frank Bia

When Stamford, Connecticut-based AmeriCares set out to find a medical director, it only had to look up the road in New Haven to find the perfect candidate. Dr. Frank Bia, an expert in infectious diseases and international health, recently joined AmeriCares after a 30-year career at the Yale University School of Medicine, where he served as Professor of both Medicine (Infectious Diseases) and Laboratory Medicine (Clinical Microbiology).  He was also co-director of the Yale/Johnson & Johnson Physician Scholars in International Health Program for young physicians training at Yale and elsewhere.

As Medical Director, Dr. Bia will oversee the planning, assessment, resourcing and clinical operations of AmeriCares Global Programs Operations, as well as the organizations work with free health care clinics throughout the United States.  He will also provide medical oversight of the AmeriCares Free Clinics in Connecticut.

Dr. Bia is a member of numerous professional societies, including the American College of Physicians, American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene and the Infectious Diseases Society of America. He has published over 100 journal articles and book chapters in medical journals and publications, including the Journal of Infectious Diseases and the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene.

Dr. Bia received his Bachelor of Science degree from Fordham University and his medical degree from Cornell University Medical College, as well as a Masters of Public Health degree from the Harvard School of Public Health.  His medical residency and chief residency were completed at the University of Pennsylvania.  In addition, he honed his expertise in the areas of infectious diseases, tropical medicine and international health while working abroad in Haiti, China, Colombia, Nicaragua, Eritrea, Iran and Thailand.
