AmeriCares sent several shipments of critical aid to combat the growing cholera epidemic which has claimed more than 1,700 lives in Zimbabwe. Our delivery of vital medicines and supplies will help save lives and reduce the spread of the deadly disease. The medicines will also be used by local hospitals and clinics to replenish medicines depleted during the health crisis.
“The cholera outbreak in Zimbabwe is particularly heartbreaking considering the food crisis, broken economy, political strife and the AIDS pandemic.” said Jessica Ginger, who joined AmeriCares as an associate after volunteering with orphans in Zimbabwe. “We are striving to bring some measure of hope to Zimbabweans with these shipments of medicines and supplies.”
AmeriCares is also delivering 500,000 PŪR™ water purification sachets – enough to provide 10,000 families with enough safe drinking water for the difficult weeks to come. AmeriCares teams with Procter & Gamble to deliver PŪR in order to provide safe drinking water to communities around the world.

About Cholera:
The cholera outbreak has spread throughout Zimbabwe and is spilling over the borders into neighboring countries. Nearly 900,000 people from Zimbabwe are estimated to be displaced, many due to severe drought and civil strife.
Cholera is responsible for some of the most needless deaths in the world, many of them children under five years old. As many as 30% of patients are dying from the infection in remote areas of Zimbabwe – yet treated quickly, cholera kills fewer than 1% of patients.
Since 1997, AmeriCares has given more than $25 million in humanitarian, disaster and medical aid to the people of Zimbabwe. AmeriCares has helped Zimbabwe with relief supplies ranging from medicines, medical supplies and nutritional support. AmeriCares is also reaching out to other partners on the ground to determine what additional support can be sent in the near future.
