While the violent crisis in Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan is waning, thousands of men, women and children remain homeless and are living in refugee camps. The number of civilians killed in the crisis is still being determined and as many as 15,000 people were wounded.
To help treat the injured and replenish supplies in local hospitals caring for people wounded in the crisis, AmeriCares relief efforts include delivering $3 million in lifesaving medical aid. AmeriCares sent airlifts and shipments of aid including antibiotics, prenatal vitamins, syringes, bandages, wound dressings, surgical supplies, wheelchairs and other critical supplies.
“The medicines received were exactly what was requested and urgently needed to treat the wounded patients. This was the first such assistance received at these hospitals,” says Gerald Oberndorfer, director of humanitarian programs with the U.S. State Department. Mr. Oberndorfer coordinated the delivery of AmeriCares aid to the Osh and Jalal-Abad Hospitals.
Located in dangerous conflict zones, doctors and nurses at the Osh and Jalal-Abad Hospitals are caring for seriously injured civilians wounded during the violence. The antibiotics will help treat over 15,000 people suffering from serious infection; and the prenatal vitamins will help more than 1,100 pregnant women and their unborn babies.
AmeriCares also provided desperately needed surgical sutures; enough to help treat over 500 injuries, including gun-shot wounds and lacerations, as well as specialized bandages to treat burn victims.
AmeriCares continues to reach out to local partners supporting refugees displaced by the violent conflict. Your support helps the people affected in Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan as well as millions of people in crisis around the world.
