March 22 event to benefit AmeriCares India aid programs

Stamford, Conn. – Feb. 15, 2012 – Shabana Azmi will be the Special Guest of Honor at a March 22 fundraiser and art auction benefitting AmeriCares humanitarian aid programs in India. The famed actress and activist, who was recently honored with India’s prestigious Padma Bhushan award, first became involved with the global health and disaster relief organization nearly 20 years ago helping deliver aid to Latur and Osmanabad following the 1993 earthquake.

“The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” correspondent and comedian Aasif Mandvi will serve as celebrity auctioneer during the event, A Celebration of Indian Art & Humanity, at the Aicon Gallery, 35 Great Jones St., in New York City’s East Village. Guests will have the opportunity to bid on artwork by prominent Indian artists such as M.F. Husain and Owais Husain donated by Aicon Gallery.

Aroon Shivdasani, executive director of the Indo-American Arts Council, who participated in the 1993 aid mission with Shabana Azmi, will also attend. Acclaimed chef Hemant Mathur of the Michelin-starred Indian restaurant Tulsi in Midtown is catering the event.

The AmeriCares India Foundation responds to emergency medical needs and supports long-term humanitarian assistance programs in India and throughout the region. Last year, AmeriCares India delivered $1.4 million worth of free medical assistance in 20 Indian states, including free health care in the Mumbai slums and medical camps for disaster survivors. AmeriCares, which has an office and a warehouse in Mumbai, also conducts disaster preparedness workshops for emergency medical personnel and community-based health education programs for disease prevention. The AmeriCares India Foundation was honored as “the best U.S. nongovernmental organization working towards humanity” by the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce in 2009.

Tickets are $50 each or $75 per couple. To purchase tickets, or for more information, contact Jen Martins at jmartins@AmeriCares.org or (203) 658-9556.
