National campaign encourages charitable donations to kick off holiday season
Stamford, Conn. – Nov. 26, 2012 – AmeriCares is encouraging supporters to participate in #GivingTuesday – a first-of-its-kind effort to create a national day on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving dedicated to charitable giving. The global health and disaster relief organization is embarking on a social media campaign, inviting its nearly 20,000 Facebook fans and Twitter followers to join thousands of Americans in supporting their favorite charities tomorrow by making a donation. Organizers hope #GivingTuesday will catch on as the official kick-off for holiday giving, much like Black Friday has become the start of the holiday shopping season.
“Once they have gotten the Black Friday doorbusters and Cyber Monday deals, we are asking supporters to remember those less fortunate this holiday season,” said AmeriCares Senior Vice President of Development Kevin Allan. “Every donation allows AmeriCares to respond to natural disasters and daily emergencies caused by chronic poverty. I can’t think of a better holiday gift than delivering lifesaving medicines and supplies to the world’s most vulnerable people.”
#GivingTuesday was originated this year by a coalition of nonprofit organizations led by the 92nd Street Y. It aims to inspire people to give back in better, smarter ways to the charities and causes they support and help create a better world.
