While National Volunteer Week shines a well-deserved spotlight on the crucial work of our dedicated volunteers – their impact is felt throughout AmeriCares every day of the year.
The AmeriCares Free Clinics, serving the uninsured in Connecticut, rely upon the more than 260 volunteers who work together to provide free primary care to some of Connecticut’s neediest residents.
“From the doctors and nurses, to the interpreters and administrative assistants—our volunteers are the heart and soul of our AmeriCares Free Clinics program,” explained Terri McCartney, Associate Director. “We couldn’t keep our doors open without them.”
In 2013, the clinics, located in Norwalk, Bridgeport and Danbury, provided free health care valued at more than $6.2 million to nearly 3,000 patients. This year, our new Stamford clinic began treating patients and is expected to provide an additional $750,000 in health care for 2014.

More than two dozen volunteers fulfill key needs at AmeriCares headquarters — assisting with research projects, doing administrative jobs and working on our special events.
When disasters like Typhoon Haiyan strike, it’s all hands on deck. That’s when we call upon our roster of 100 additional volunteers who are available to help out at a moment’s notice. This group of volunteers carries out important, high-quality, time sensitive work, including putting together emergency kits for displaced families.
“We would like to extend our appreciation and sincere gratitude to all of our volunteers,” said Mary Jo Loparco, Director of Talent Management. “AmeriCares is fortunate to have a dedicated network of committed individuals who volunteer the time and talents to help us continue our mission. Together they play a very meaningful role in our work every day, and help make a difference in countless lives.”
