Access to Health Care Changes a Life

Fredida

Fredida – a patient at the Americares Free Clinic in Stamford, CT

In 2002, Fredida was diagnosed with a thyroid condition. Her illness left her with constant exhaustion and feelings of depression, but the single mom lacked the resources to pay for medical visits and medications. She went years without treatment.

In addition to the symptoms she suffered from her thyroid condition, Fredida gradually began experiencing chronic back and foot pain. A friend recommended she visit Americares clinic in Stamford—finally, she received the care she needed.

At the clinic, Fredida learned she was pre-diabetic. Her doctor recommended she see a nutritionist and was hopeful a healthier diet and exercise would alleviate her back and foot pain.

Americares Free Clinic of Stamford volunteer physician Dr. Katy Close now provides Fredida with regular care. She sees Vijayshree Pande, a volunteer nutritionist at the clinic, once a month for diet instruction and exercise guidelines to help improve her health. Fredida is also able to access medication to treat her thyroid condition.

In just one year, Fredida has lost 30 pounds. Today, she is healthier, stronger and more confident.

“There are so many people who don’t receive the help they need because they don’t have the means. Because of Americares, I’m no longer one of them.”
