Tech for Health and Equity In 2020, Americares and Baxter teamed up to pilot a new project aimed at empowering people diagnosed with diabetes who are affected by poverty to better manage their conditions through mobile messaging. The project uses an evidence-based, health-focused text messaging application to encourage patients with diabetes to adhere to their prescribed treatment while promoting healthy lifestyles. Importantly, the program also addresses barriers in access to much needed resources such as food. With Baxter’s support, Americares is teaming up with five free and charitable clinics to test the model with 500 patients. Together, we are advancing the field of knowledge around what works best to help people overcome barriers to health and live healthy lives.
Partner in Medical Outreach Each year, the Americares Medical Outreach Program supports more than 1,000 volunteer medical trips to 82 countries with medicines, supplies, and educational resources. Baxter’s product donations have anchored a large percentage of the trips taken by volunteer medical professionals, whose lifesaving surgical and primary care has changed tens of thousands of lives around the world. Last year, Baxter provided donated medical products that reached 39 of those countries through 274 medical outreach trips undertaken by 238 medical outreach teams. These U.S.-based volunteer medical teams travel to some of the most impoverished areas of the world where even basic medical care may be non-existent or inaccessible. Using donated medicines and medical supplies, the doctors, nurses and specialists provide a range of health care services and have a profound impact on the quality of life and productivity of the people they treat.
Ready to Respond Baxter has been behind us as we respond to emergencies around the world with health-focused relief, recovery and preparedness programs, including many of the major emergency programs we’ve undertaken in recent years for Hurricane Dorian survivors in the Bahamas, Hurricane Michael survivors in the Florida panhandle, Hurricane Harvey survivors in Texas and survivors of multiple disasters in India. Most recently, Baxter has supported Americares’ ongoing work to provide free health care to Venezuelan migrants in Colombia, who are in dire need of basic medical care and medicines, especially for infections, chronic disease management and prenatal health. As we remain committed to helping address this regional crisis, we are bolstered by Baxter’s partnership.
