PARTNER PROFILE:

The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust

The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust and Americares are improving the health of women, girls, and newborns in Ghana’s Ashanti and Bono regions.

A Focus on Healthier Futures

Americares has partnered with the Helmsley Charitable Trust since 2020, when the global philanthropy helped Americares provide insulin to people with diabetes affected by poverty at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2022, Helmsley and Americares launched a transformative three-year program to improve the health of women and children in the Ashanti and Bono regions of Ghana. With the local Ghanaian nonprofit Women’s Health to Wealth as a key partner, the project is operating across multiple sites, including schools and clinics.

Changing the Lives of Women and Girls

Harnessing the expertise and resources of Ghana-based Women’s Health to Wealth, Americares and the Helmsley Charitable Trust, the comprehensive health program is active at these community sites:

  • School-based girls’ clubs: Fifty clubs have been established where adolescent girls engage in learning and empowerment sessions to enhance their sexual and reproductive health knowledge and self-confidence. A pivotal aim is to mitigate school dropout rates attributed to early pregnancies.
  • Well-woman clinics: Addressing a critical gap in preventative health care, 13 clinics now offer screening and referrals for chronic and sexually transmitted diseases.
  • Essential newborn care program: Focused on reducing infant mortality, the program equips health care providers at 100 sites with essential skills in neonatal resuscitation and newborn care, ensuring the well-being of newborns.
  • Supply-chain management support: To optimize Women’s Health to Wealth’s capacity to manage supply chain operations and facilitate the efficient distribution of medicines and supplies to health centers, Americares is providing resources, technical assistance, and a cloud-based solution.

The comprehensive health program harnesses the expertise and resources of Ghana-based Women’s Health to Wealth, Americares and the Helmsley Charitable Trust. From school-based health clubs for adolescent girls to essential newborn care training for health workers, improved screening for chronic disease at well-woman clinics and cloud-based management of medicine and supply distribution, the program bolsters health services at every stage of a woman’s life.
