Our Work in Country

Although Ghana has made great strides in health care, preventable and treatable diseases such as neonatal conditions, respiratory infections, diarrhea and chronic conditions such as heart disease are among the leading causes of death.

We provide a wide range of support to a network of facilities ranging from referral hospitals to community clinics and orphanages across the country.

Americares has been providing assistance to Ghana since 1991, delivering over $100 million in medicine and medical supplies to support health services for families in need.

In Ghana, Health at Every Stage

Women’s health needs support at every stage of life: from the first days after birth, during childhood and adolescence and through and after a woman’s reproductive years. In Ghana, with partners the Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust and Ghana-based Women’s Health to Wealth, Americares is making significant strides in addressing the underlying factors contributing to sexual, reproductive, and chronic health risks. The joint program empowers women, girls and communities to safeguard their health and well-being, ensuring a brighter and healthier future for generations to come.

Key activities include:

  • School-based girls’ clubs:  At 50 newly established girls’ clubs, adolescent girls improve their sexual and reproductive health knowledge and self-confidence in regular sessions. One goal: Reduce school dropout rates due to early pregnancies.
  • Well-woman clinics: Thirteen clinics now provide essential screening services for noncommunicable diseases and sexually transmitted infections, targeting women of reproductive age. By the end of the program’s second year, more than 3,000 women had been screened, with notable interventions for conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, cervical abnormalities, and sexually transmitted disease.
  • Essential newborn care: This initiative focuses on reducing infant mortality associated with respiratory issues and infections. More than 700 healthcare workers across 100 sites have been trained to provide essential newborn care and neonatal resuscitation.
  • Supply-chain management support: To help ensure the efficient distribution of medicines and supplies to health centers, Americares is providing Women’s Health to Wealth with resources, technical assistance, and a cloud-based solution.

Our Work with Partners

Most recently Americares has been working with Zipline, Women’s Health to Wealth, Ghana’s Ministry of Health and the Ghana Health Service to deliver urgently needed medicines, medical supplies and infection-control supplies to hard-to-reach health facilities in Ghana.
